The Comedy of Errors (2000) - Director's Note
Not far beneath its façade of farcical gags and beatings, Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors explores several serious (though no less funny!) concerns. Like existentialist salesmen, Shakespeare’s zany characters take us through the woes and wit of the human journey to find our lost selves; they remind us of the mortally threatening passage of time and the dual potential of our sexuality to harm or to heal, showing us what fools we make of ourselves along the way. Only a master like Shakespeare could so deftly combine tragedy and comedy and edify us through raucous entertainment. An early work, written probably around the time of The Taming of the Shrew, to which it bears a strong resemblance, The Comedy of Errors is Shakespeare’s shortest and most unified play.
Thanks to an unrelenting and grossly overdemanding director, the cast has worked very hard to present this hilarious play to you. We hope you enjoy the result!
